The President of Rohm (ローム, Game Card supplier), Mr. Azuma, said something peculiar in the recent financial Q&A.
（顧客が） たぶん初、非常に少ない生産台数を想定されていて、市場でもすぐに完売するぐらいのところに来ているので、どこまで増やされるのかについてはまだきちんと話はできていないが、大きく上振れるだろうと思っている
[Nintendo] probably expected a very small production volume initially, and it is at the point where they are quickly selling out in the market. While we haven’t had a proper discussion yet about how much volume to increase, I think that it will be a significant upswing.
Considering how much Switch 2 consoles Nintendo stockpiled for the launch, I find it hard to believe that they ordered a “very small production” of Game Cards. My speculations:
- The other Game Card supplier(s) might be having production difficulties, and the orders will fall on Rolm now.
- Rohm is also supplying Game-Key Cards, and the demands from publishers for GKC exceeded Nintendo’s estimate.
Whatever the reason was, Azuma called it “one of the company’s major opportunities.”
P.S.: Just to be clear, there’s no public information regarding the supplier(s) of Game-Key Cards yet, AFAIK.
