Famitsu had a long interview with Mario Kart World’s producer Kosuke Yabuki. The whole article is worth reading, and I’m only going to highlight one technical question.
Q: Was the know-how from [Nintendo’s Tears of the Kingdom and other open world titles] utilized in this game’s development?
A: On the technical side, the programmers did share information with each other, such as “how to efficiently load the map”. And for art, we had conversations like “you should watch out for this sort of thing”. However, since Mario Kart is “a game about riding a kart at high speed”, you can’t reference or apply that know-how directly. The feel of the controls is completely different; even if you create narrow alleyways, karts can’t fit through them. Taking those constraints into account, we really delved into how to create the world fit for Mario Kart.
