Knowledge-based discourse

[Reacting to Star Fox movie news and game rumor] Back in January, Furukawa explained Nintendo’s approach to film production in an interview:

Taking meticulous care and committing to quality craft applies not only to games, but equally to our video adaptations and character merchandise. […] it ultimately leads to our customers becoming fans, rather than being merely aware of our characters. Although we don’t entirely disregard short-term profitability, what matters most is increasing the exposure of our characters outside of games […] even in regions where game consoles aren’t widely adopted.

So the movie’s inclusion of McCloud isn’t just to sell games, but to introduce him to a broader audience unfamiliar with the character. This is why they need to promote him prior to the premiere instead of keeping it a secret.
