In a long interview with Denfaminico Gamer, Masahiro Sakurai said the following about AI-made games:
- There are too many Steam releases, and AI makes it worse. Most are “titles that can’t eat”, i.e. unprofitable.
- Shoddy AI-made games mostly just reproduce systems existing in other games.
- Games with a simple system, such as Librarian: Tidy Up the Arcane Library, are very easy for AI to imitate.
- AI may produce something similar to Ueda’s Ico or Shadow of the Colossus, but can’t make what Ueda will create in the future—the “originality” that only humans can possess.
- People who pioneer/walk on new paths, who understand and create with their own flavors, will matter more and more in the era overflowing with shoddily made works.
Elsewhere in the interview, Sakurai also admitted that like unusual food, some people dislike original creations for being “not quite right”. When Smash first came out, some complained that it was “different” from Street Fighter and Virtua Fighter. Even now there are those who think of Air Rider as “fake Mario Kart”.
