It’s been known for a while that Innolux supplies LCD panels for Switch 2. Due to past reports, however, there are questions whether Sharp (シャープ) is a secondary supplier. During yesterday’s shareholders meeting, Sharp’s President Okitsu gave a non-answer.
Responding to a shareholder question, Okitsu said: “We have contracts with individual companies, so I’d refrain from commenting.” (image below) This is a classic corporate non-answer, possibly due to confidentiality, but slightly more on the non-denial side.
Is this potentially good news for those wanting a Switch 2 with Sharp panel? Not necessarily. Sharp is downsizing its display business, and plan to resale panels sourced from Hon Hai Group (Innolux’s parent company; image below) to “key customers”. Ostensibly the panel resale plan will start in 2026. However, we don’t know if for the Switch 2 contract Sharp moved ahead with the resale scheme, since Innolux is already a Nintendo supplier.
A more plausible explanation for Okitsu’s non-denial is that Sharp may be involved in the Switch 2 panel only to a small degree. For example, they fab the LCD glass and then transfer it to Innolux for assembly. This is quite possible because Shen Zhen Australis is reportedly the sole supplier of the backlight module in the panel, suggesting that Innolux is assembling the panel with custom components Nintendo sourced from various companies.
