According to the LexisNexis PatentSight data, Nintendo’s patent portfolio valuation ranked 5th globally in the video game classification by the end of 2024. Tencent is the distant #1, followed by Sony.

By inventor location, USA is #1 but China is catching up. Japan holds steady at #3.

- Nintendo’s flat valuation is mostly due to its Japan concentration. From 2010-2024, >90% of its inventors were located domestically.
- Sony’s inventor locations diversified from 67% in Japan in ’10 to 47% in ’24. The expansion contributed to its rising valuation.
- But MS’ acquisitions didn’t help?
- The high valuations of Tencent and NetEase, aside from their scales, can be attributed to their multi-platform strategy: mobile, PC, and console.
- IGT and Light & Wonder (and Konami to a smaller degree) are casino machine developers.
- Magic Leap’s AR/MR patents hold value for gaming applications.
