Yes, Nintendo of America filed a Virtual Console trademark application on Apr 21 (img 1), but the reports are greatly exaggerated.
NOA holds two “VirtualConsole” trademarks already in effect since 2006. This new additional filing is a Section 66(a) application to extend VC’s international registration to the US (img 2).

This is an uninteresting legal maneuver that’s most likely irrelevant to Virtual Console’s future.
