A D-pad patent for Nintendo Museum’s Big Controller (img 1) has surfaced. Due to its size, the D-pad doesn’t use conventional rubber switches but optical sensors (#110 in imgs 2-3) to detect user input. When the D-pad is pressed down, the urethane cushions underneath (#107) absorb the impact and push the pad back up.
