Knowledge-based discourse

Following up on my previous post regarding the new Sharp-assembled LCD panel for Switch 2, I think I’ve identified the supplier of its backlight module. Ways Electron (伟时电子), a longtime supplier of Sharp, disclosed in its 2025 Annual Report that:

“In H2 2025, the company has gradually entered mass production for products from a world-renowned game console company.” (Note: unclear whether singular or plural in Chinese.) The timing matches Sharp Hakusan plant’s sales growth since 2025-09.

The Annual Report’s “industry overview” section also referenced the Switch 2 launch (img below). It’s a tacit confirmation w/o jeopardizing the relationship.

Unlike Shen Zhen Australis (南极光), backlight supplier for the Innolux panel, Ways isn’t forthcoming with its module’s specs. We’ll have to wait for someone to test the Sharp LCD panel. That said, Ways Electron has a good reputation as a backlight supplier for automotive displays, used by Mercedes, BMW, BYD, Toyota, and many other brands. Although we can’t be certain that it’d perform better than the Innolux panel without testing, it’s a good starting point.
