Knowledge-based discourse

I’m going to warn people that a new Bloomberg “opinion” column by Gearoid Reidy either intentionally or incompetently misinterpreted Miyamoto’s recent quote about generative AI (img below; URL in alt text) to prop up his “AI can fix gaming” think piece—extremely rich coming from a washed up assistant producer.

What Miyamoto-san described as “a very good thing” is him encouraging creators to “seriously contemplate” what “creating” truly means, while AI becoming more entrenched (for which he didn’t advocate). He then pointed out that past designs created merely by copying hardly stood the test of time—what can endure is when an individual designs with intent. He believes that there’s plenty left for human to do. (Watch his full remarks below from 24’14”, or read my previous post here.)

The answer is a nuanced, philosophical take from an distinguished creative mind who himself stood the test of time. It’s unfortunate that Gearoid Reidy reduced it to a boosterish soundbite. I probably shouldn’t have been surprised by Reidy misunderstanding something though, since he already demonstrated an inaptitude to read the company’s earnings report.

Lastly allow me to remind everyone of the following Miyamoto quote from his 2024 New York Times interview:

There is a lot of talk about A.I., […] everyone starts to go in the same direction, but that is where Nintendo would rather go in a different direction.
