Regarding the Donkey Kong movie recently found in the US copyright database, it isn’t a copyright “registration” but “recordation”. It grants no legal ownership but is a public notice announcing that Nintendo has licensed the DK copyright to Universal to develop a film, so that others (e.g., DKC TV series producers) have a chance to contest the license. In addition, sometimes a copyright recordation is required to secure fundings.
