[Reacting to news of Nintendo store-within-a-store in Toronto] To my knowledge, Nintendo licensed stores, pop-ups, and stores-within-a-store have/had appeared in Australia, France, Germany, Hong Kong, Korea, Malaysia, Philippines, Taiwan, Thailand, and UK. Now Canada, and probably soon Indonesia and India, will join the list. It signals a concerted effort to expand retail presence overseas.
IMHO, the strategy is more multifaceted than just leveraging Nintendo’s position as the last bastion of physical media to capture more shelf space and thus face time with the general public. Unlike many VG executives, whose takeaway from Roblox is simply UGC+live service=$$$, I think that Nintendo management saw an opportunity to facilitate social interactions around games, as “third places” continue to dwindle around us. Carving out precious system resources for GameChat, and creating dedicated retail space where fans can rub shoulders are manifestations of that strategy.
